Zeev,

I don't know who gave us the right to question. It is enough for me to know that we have the capacity. Just as the capacity to think carries with it the obligation to think, the capacity to question carries with it the obligation to use that capacity. In my opinion, of course.

To whom do we owe this obligation? To ourselves, if nobody else.

My own decision, less than conscious, to turn away from the religious training of my unreasoning years came when I was introduced to the concept of original sin. I could not - and still cannot - accept that a God who would condemn individuals for an act they did not commit is deserving of anything but censure. Interesting to note that without original sin, there is no need for redemption, and the entire Christian drama crumbles.

Faith is the last refuge of the savage, just as patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel.

In my opinion, of course.

Steve

Hi Zeev,
IMO we question because God gave us a mind and the free will to question Him. I have done this and found that I am not at the intelligence level to create a Universe with humans that can feel and think. As God said to Job "who is this that darkens my council without knowledge?" To me there is a plan that very much includes the Jewish people to bring people back to Him.
I have found peace in the suffering of the Jews, (including what my sons and I have gone through) by understanding there is a plan to all this and the Al Mighty will make it right for them in His time (Zechariah). The people that are using Him to excuse their violence will be held accountable. Actually that is the only way I can make any sense of it.
As much as I can, I understand your feelings and hurt and am just sharing my experience.
I hope you have a prosperous and peaceful week,
Nancy
