Tim Harrabin said: "Qualcomm would like to
merge CDMAone with the Universal Mobile
Telecommunication Standard. We would welcome this if it
could be done, but this has been looked at in depth already.
We haven't seen any proposals as to how it could be done."

It is simple, cdma2000 will be produced. L M Ericsson and their crony kleptocracy will be cut out of cdma business since they won't agree to a licence. cdma2000 will develop hugely with many backers such as Lucent, Unwired Planet, 3Com, Philips and many others. It will gain the lion's share of mobile wireless over the next 6 years.

Europe will breach free trade agreements for some time, but finally have to allow cdma technology to be sold in Europe. cdma2000 will become the world standard because of huge market share. UMTS will adopt it as the world standard as a fait accompli.

Maybe Tim could follow that logic. I guess if Vodafone isn't a licencee they'll miss out. No wonder he finds it disquieting. But wait...Vodafone and Airtouch are cutting a multibillion merger deal? Aha, so they will get in the back door maybe. There were some royalty consequences but I can't remember what they were. All good for Qualcomm.

Jim Lurgio, how was the news from Korea bad for Qualcomm? Sure they are whining about paying the agreed fees and want free cdma2000. That is GOOD news. It means cdma is Still on Top!

Shi - Where did you get this clip. It is hard to judge what was meant by Vodaphone from this out-of-context clip.
