Baptist Head Urges Clinton To Quit

LINDEN, N.C. (AP) -- The head of the Southern Baptist Convention says President
Clinton should resign from office ''before he is instrumental in corrupting all our young
people.''

Paige Patterson, president of the nation's largest Protestant denomination, said Clinton,
also a Baptist, should resign ''for the sake of the country'' and seek forgiveness for his
personal transgressions.

Patterson, who is also president of Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in North
Carolina, made his comments Sunday following his guest sermon at First Baptist Church in
Linden, about 35 miles south of Raleigh.

Patterson said Clinton, who admitted having an inappropriate relationship with White
House intern Monica Lewinsky, is no different from other people in seeking forgiveness.

''If he'll repent and trust the Lord Jesus as his savior, he can be forgiven and can find what
life is really all about,'' Patterson said.

Patterson said he is concerned about Americans' steady support of Clinton as long as the
economy is good.

''This bespeaks a certain enthrallment with materialism, which is exactly what caused the
demise of Rome, to say nothing of 21 other great civilizations. And it will kill us too.''

There are an estimated 15.6 million Southern Baptists.

Les, it was stated as a fact on ABC and NBC that Sid Blumenthal has been calling reporters urging them to dig up dirt on Hyde. Sam Donaldson speculated this to be possibly an impeachable offense for Clinton based on the "failure to control subordinates" clause.
