. . . they are all equally sure that theirs is the correct one.

And yet many who are so sure theirs is the correct one would be shocked to find variations of so many of their "sacred" stories in the scripture of religions not their own. For instance, many creation stories tell of the god creating the human being out of earth and bringing it to life by breathing the breath of life into it. Several cultures' mythology contain flood stories, and almost all have some form of "The Golden Rule."

The more religions I study, the more I go through phases of belief and disbelief in some kind of divine reality. And that's about as close to being "religious" as I come. I gave up thinking I could "know" anything about the true nature of god (if there is a god) quite some time ago. On the other hand, I seem to have a more profound appreciation of the existential mystery of it all.

Len;

No one is going to change their mind, as they are all equally sure that theirs is the correct one.

As long as it is correct for myself and my family that's what counts. Also when one tries to say he has all the answers I run very fast in the opposite direction. As far as why engage......... I think many atrocities could have been avoided if people morally would have intervened. Do think Emile will go away if we stop engaging? If anything it most likely will produce many more Emiles as time goes by it's called hate groups and their are laws that hopefully will be enacted to stop this nonsense. You also have not noticed but there were a number of people supporting Emile when he first started this nonsense many have dropped off but a few. I do not feel that all this was in vain. What did indeed happened was more and more of his true colors were shown as he became more and more dogmatic. He never called Jews Nazi's or Israel but he has recently and people are starting to see through him that followed him. Thats why I engage to show what this man is so people don't get sucked up into his distasteful propaganda. He only wishes that people worship him and not search for themselves for the truth. Besides my Wife is the religious nut :-) I don't even go to any religious service on a weekly basis. Why? I wish to avoid the same that we see here it's called I am right your wrong. If it's good enough for yourself than thats all that counts it's called a personal relationship with God or without God.

Alan

Len,

<<Discussing religion with people of differing beliefs is the ultimate exercise in futility>>

Not so. My beliefs are very different from those of Zeev, Rarebird, TLC, Nancy, Wallacestevens, yourself, etc., but we had a very pleasant discussion going for a little while. It only becomes futile when intolerance enters the picture.

Anybody who thinks he sees the entire picture is blind.

Anybody who would impose his picture on others is evil.

Simple things, but I believe them.

Steve

Len,

You said, "Discussing religion with people of differing beliefs is the ultimate exercise in futility." You are wrong!

Your faiths and beliefs should be able to be discussed and proven 100% correct. Otherwise what you believe is worthless. God is 100% perfect. His words are 100% proven correct, yesterday, today and tomorrow. My belief system is based upon 100% accuracy. And I expect nothing less from God.

So I am willing and happy to discuss my belief system. Are you?

If I prove to you that my belief system is 100% accurate and is the only truth, would you believe it?

God Bless,
Steve
