Global Telecoms Provider Telia Standardizes on ViaSat DAMA for New Services CARLSBAD, Calif., Sept. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- ViaSat (Nasdaq: VSAT - news) has signed a long-term partnering contract with Telia AB, Sweden to provide Demand Assigned Multiple Access (DAMA) satellite networking. The contract was executed through EUROCOM Telecommunications AS, a Norway-based system integrator and ViaSat Partner Company. Telia, the number one telecommunications provider in Sweden, is expanding its offerings to include satellite DAMA services, and is choosing StarWire DAMA products from ViaSat as its standard. The initial order under the contract is for a pilot StarWire system worth just under $500,000. Installation of this pilot network, at various sites in Sweden, is scheduled to begin in October. Following four to six months of testing and marketing of the new DAMA services, the global purchase agreement enables all Telia Group companies to purchase terminals directly from ViaSat and set up services for their customers. ''Telia is a very technologically savvy company. Adding them as a partner for StarWire is a big win and a strong testimonial for us,'' said Joe Zerucha, ViaSat director of worldwide sales. ''We are committed to creating and delivering products that provide our customers with a decided advantage in their marketplace.'' According to Telia, the company ''chose the ViaSat DAMA platform for its advanced design which serves a wide range of satellite services. Another key factor in Telia's choice of StarWire is the future integration of Paired Carrier Multiple Access (PCMA) into the products, expected in spring of 1999. PCMA is a new and patented technology for simultaneously transmitting both directions of a satellite circuit through just one channel. For symmetric applications (such as telephone service, video conferencing, or digital T-1 links) PCMA can double bandwidth efficiency, which translates directly into higher data rates, more subscribers, and lower transmission costs. EUROCOM is a distributor and system integrator based in Norway.
