So basically, no one trusts Datek right now.

You might want to re-think this assessment. I'd say there are a relative "few" who don't trust Datek. I'd venture that Datek has many, many satisfied clients, of which I am one. They are not perfect. And if you are a serious day trader, they may not be appropriate. But they are far superior to Discover and Fidelity (my only direct references). Compared to other browser based, internet brokers, they may in fact be the best there is.

Generally, very fast execution (but not always).
Express order entry.
R/T account updates.
Unlimited free r/t quotes.
Very cheap commissions.
Direct access to ISLD.
Free checking (well, so they say, but don't hold your breath)
Free Streaming quotes (well, so they say, might be able to hold your breath on this one)
Great customer service (just kidding, actually they do answer phones, contrary to what is often posted here)

As far as Datek going out of business, this is ludicrous. There is absolutely no evidence to suggest they are in trouble. On the contrary, I would guess just the opposite is true.

I wouldn't discount Datek due to the comments of a few posters who are continually bad mouthing Datek. I second gbh's comments. Datek's not perfect, but they have a lot to offer and are always improving. They are far and away superior in order entry, execution and reporting speed than the other three internet brokers I have tried.

The comparisons to the direct trading systems ring a little hollow because they are not apple to apple comparisons. If you want to pay twice the commission rate and feel you can offset this by the superior executions these systems claim to offer, then you are not comparing Datek to a true internet discount broker.

Jay Donohoo, So basically, no one trusts Datek right now.>

Overall, I would have to agree with the response given by gbh, that Datek has many, many satisfied clients.

However, I would have to speculate that there are more than a relative few who have a serious problem with Datek. No doubt problem people are over represented on this thread. This thread is primarily for problem solving, therefore you see a lot of problems. If someone isn't articulating a problem (or question) or a solution (or answer), then why post?

Nonetheless, consider the math that suggests the people posting problems or concerns here represent a very very small percentage of the people that actually have those problems or concerns and therefore necessarily imply that there are a lot of us out there.

Take the reciprocal of the product of the proportion of people falling into the following categories: of Datek customers that have a problem what percent are even aware that the problem exists; of Datek customers that have a problem and are aware of it what percent bother to complain or actively seek a solution other than merely leaving Datek; of those Datek customers that complain to Datek or seek a solution or answer , what percent pursue their issue further given that they are not satisfied with Datek's response by seeking a solution elsewhere; of these people what percent are also SI members; etc. ect.
