Wednesday September 9, 6:00 am Eastern Time Company Press Release WinStar Providing Local Number Portability in 15 Major Markets LNP To Be Deployed Nationwide This Year NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 9, 1998-- WINSTAR COMMUNICATIONS, INC. (NASDAQ - WCII) announced today that it now provides Local Number Portability (LNP) to its customers in more than half of its markets, including New York, Los Angeles, Boston, Chicago, Dallas and Houston.
Altogether, the company provides LNP in 15 of the 27 markets it currently serves. By the end of the year, the company will have deployed LNP on a nationwide basis.
Local Number Portability enables WinStar customers to keep all their current business telephone numbers when switching to WinStar's facilities-based competitive local exchange carrier (CLEC) services network. WinStar's LNP technology provides an easy transition to its service while enabling customers to maintain the use of any customized services such as ''caller ID.''

By year's end, WinStar will offer LNP in the following additional 11 markets: Columbus, Detroit, Fort Worth, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, Newark, Oakbrook, IL, Oakland, Orange County, CA, San Francisco, and Tampa.
