<OT> Sheesh Im falling into this chasm and I know better.... but people, there is definitely something going on with N Cal gas prices, its obviously some form of price gauging (not sure of the legality) there have been talk shows about it, and gas station owners have picketed the vendors but Im not sure the details. At one point, not sure if it was last year or early this year, gas prices went up around .80 BAY AREA ONLY while the rest of the country pretty much stayed flat. This coincided with a rapid increase in the price of real estate in the area, and I suspect a rapid increase in demand for gas in the area (tons of people moved in, no apts, traffic got MUCH worse, starting 1996 coinciding with the internet). I think what happened was, the gas vendors noticed the huge increase in demand for gas here, noticed there is a limited supply of stations due to land mass etc and raised prices regionally to the maximum levels. They called it "regional pricing" or something like that initially and then later the gas companies wouldnt comment. Since the increase was only in the last year or so, and since it was only in N Ca. and since it was so extreme (30% price rise minimum), then the arguments cost of land/labor, taxes, etc dont explain the phenomenon. Again, Im not sure if its legal.
