Bob... I think that's the greatest idea yet. Yes, my files are all virtual, and I now know what I was trying was never going to work. Your idea of using the scanner to do this is terrific. Can my scan contain "only" the ProcessMS = "E:\virt\newshort",VMS; line plus the input="in.lst"; output ="newshort.lst"?? My list was not the result of an earlier scan, but symbols I picked up off the net at various locations and I just wanted to peek at them. Thanks to you and Sean. Ken
