I don't want to get in any involved academic discussion, but I believe that risk is very hard to define in advance. Every definition I have seen is flawed. Ultimately it can only be determined in retrospect which isn't much use to an investor. Basically, a stock that goes up wasn't risky, and one that went down was risky.
Lots of professors believe in random walk, but you will find few stock market millionaires that agree. It's the latter that buy yachts and vacation in Paris.
