If memory serves, the Feb bought Major Market Index futures during the 1987 crash in an attempt to soften the blow. The Fed doesn't attempt to directly control the equity markets, but if the bottom falls out, they may buy index futures to help stabilize the market. They would not do what Hong Kond recently did, however.
