>>>>Can you believe it, chestnuts already!!!!

Almost to the day!!!!!!!!!! I wanted to go back and search this thread to see where my garden was this time of the year, and here I find "chestnuts" heading one of my post. So today is Sept 11th. And I gathered my first(small) basket of chestnuts.

Two days later than last year,it was a dry summer. Could have something to do with it.

For next years records, I have already put up about 10 quarts and about 15 or so pints of tomato sauce. There is more on the stove, and about half bushel still on the vines. Maybe more.

This year, we also put up some pears, some peaches(thanks mon). Will have an abundance of Copra onions which we used the last one of last year in May sometime.

I let my five year daughter help start the seeds this year. Surprise!!!! One instance that was the extreme. We were suppose to have eight culiflower, five broccoli and six cabbage this year. Low and behold, we ended up with three broccoli, no culliflower, and 16 cabbage plants. But I'll admit they are darn nice full headed cabbage.

I like to make cabbage soup in a tomato based broth can can them like tomatoes or what not. That's good. We might soup some the rest leave for cold storage when Y2K hits<g>

The rest of the garden is still puttsing along, but the weeds have definitely gotten a strong hold in some areas such as the adandoned pea or bean patcher. Should have done some more lettuce or spinach, but I got lazier this year.

Most everything else still seems to have a months worth of growth, but a little here and there is done.

I see I also posted(#510) my first frost date as 10/20 last year. We'll see how this years fairs. I been getting the feeling it's going to come about a week earlier.

edit in: it's only 42° outside right now, with a sliver of the moon looking down.
