Glad you asked the question... I wasn't sure how to respond to Michelle.

HEY, I've got a question that may have already been addressed here but perhaps we can revisit for us newbies to the DELL thread.

Who buys Gateway, CPQ or DELL?

ahaha no joke jhg, Groceries is the highest value add consumer good for supply chain management. Huge volume, absolute lowest margin, huge amt of wastage in inventory, etc. Wouldnt you like to buy your groceries over the internet? The only caviat is the transportation/delivery costs but the transportation costs are already very high in that business to support all the local/regional safeway stores.

OK its a ways off I realize. Anyway the point, if you are going to look at the Dell model as applied to other businesses, you have to look at low margin businesses. Then you will see a payoff and the competition get squeezed. If you take say, semiconductor equip mfg, that use SCM and JIT, well its nice, but its not like they are going to put their competition out of business because of it.
