To all- On this day, where I predict that Pres.Bill will start to get his just deserves, a lot of Tellab's news is going overlooked.
Namely, their takeover of Coherent, was hardly noted with any posts on this string. I calulate that this added Company will add 10 cents a share net profit in 1999 ( using base of old share nos.).
Other items, namely their ongoing international sales efforts are being overlooked. To wit- punch up the following web site tellabs.com to develop an understanding of their efforts to sell to the largest nation on earth.
They just announced that Priority Telecom selected Tellab's Cablespan system for Norway, and this contract is worth $50,000,000 over 3 years. Cablespan is a new product, just starting to take off in sales, and as such is part of an overall plan to do battle in this area. This type of long range strategic global telecommunications marketing planning on Tellab's management team's part is in the same category as to why they want Ciena with it's advanced fiber-optic 40-96 channel DWM systems. Large OAKS from little acorn's well planted, will grow.
Remember, that you will not win every contract that comes down the pike, but if you are in there, hitting with advanced total systems, in many cases hybrid systems with open interfaces, that are on the leading edge of technology, you will get more than your fair share of business. It's in the same category of Mark Mcquire, with the right hitting skills you will hit over 62 home runs.
With the VAST amount of money that will be spent on global information equipment updating and new purchases over the next 10 years, you will have spendid growth of net profit's per share, and therefore excellent growth of share price.
A LONG TERM BULL ON TELLAB'S NO MATTER WHAT THE SHORT TERM GREEDY ARB'S AND SOME ILL-EDUCATED ANALYST'S THINK-

Thomas, those are not the people that tend to walk. Generally a hostile takeover results in the removal of some top management (these are the guys responsible for the problems) but good management is retained. The idea is to clear out the dead wood. Engineers and designers are generally not affected by such moves. If this is an R&D company, then these are the folks TLAB would want to retain and believe me, they would make sure they are very happy.

Remember, too, that the whole idea behind poison pills is to protect the jobs of top management, not to protect shareholders or employees. Calling these provisions "shareholders' rights" is the ultimate irony because they tend to keep potential purchasers away. Remember, in a hostile takeover shareholders are asked to tender their shares at prices which are generally a significant premium over the market (remember the ITT Hilton-Starwood case?)

In any event, the market is acting as if the deal has a better than even chance of being dead.

TTFN,
CTC
