Hi Steve, the tax laws have changed as far as this strategy is concerned. So I am looking to find alternative approaches--the primary objectives are to protect equity, not have to recognize a gain this year and not to affect the holding period.

BTW, great call as far as shorting TBR and other Latin American stocks. Clearly the best bang for the buck.

Re long straddles--the premiums are too rich and I am not nimble enough to do this successfully. Now I did think of effecting a short straddle in the OEX--say October--the premiums are huge and assuming that the index stays within the range of the premiums collected, time will take care of the premium. I don't have the "intestinal fortitude"--rhymes with "calls"-- to try it however, especially just before a weekend. Lots of people lost big time in 87 when they were short the OEX puts during the crash.
