August, thanks for your response. I'm very interested in your comments about cold storage...I'd forgotten about that, although I think the concept is buried in some of my gardening/cooking books somewhere. Could you elaborate about where and how you've done the cold storage?

I wasn't planning to grow my own beans....I remember from my bean-growing days how much acreage they consume. I was thinking more along the lines of stocking up on dried beans, which provide excellent nutrition with no special storage requirements, only water for preparation and cooking.

With regard to the Coleman stove, it's been a few years since my camping days but I used to be quite a gourmet chef on the trail and on the water and I figure I can polish up those rusty skills once again <g>. I became quite adept at both the open flame and the dutch stove (I presume you mean the "double boiler" arrangement) for reheating. Do you think I could get a gig on Martha Stewart's show preparing an excellent Hollandaise using the Coleman on, say, 12/28/99?
