BLOCKBUSTER TO ROLL OUT DVD TO 500 STORES

09/10/1998

Blockbuster will begin rolling out its much anticipated DVD program to 500 stores beginning this month. All of the participating stores will have approximately 350 DVD titles for rent ,150 titles for sale and an average of 8 DVD rental units.

Some of the cities slated to receive DVD include Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, Richmond, Va., Salinas/Monterey, Calif., San Francisco and Washington D.C. Titles available will include "L.A. Confidential," "Twister," "Air ForceOne," "G.I. Jane," "Wag the Dog" and "Tomorrow Never Dies." The average cost to rent DVD hardware will not exceed $15 in any of the participating markets. The average retail price for DVD titles is $24.95. The average DVD cost and rental policy willcoincide in most markets with the policies already in place for video tapes.

In addition to the selection of DVD titles available for rent and sale in participating Blockbuster stores, DVD fans will also be able to access Blockbuster's website, to purchase additional DVD titles online. As reported Sept. 8 by DVD Insider, the video retailer will have DVD players available for rent through a partnership between Blockbuster and Philips Electronics.
