Lucent Technologies to help expand Egypt's
telecommunications infrastructure

FOR RELEASE: THURSDAY DECEMBER 04, 1997

CAIRO, EGYPT --- Lucent Technologies has been selected by Telecom Egypt to participate in
the expansion of Egypt's telecommunications network, which will double telephone ownership in
the country over the next five years.

Under the agreement, Lucent will deploy switching and wireless access technologies, and provide
project management expertise to Telecom Egypt.

Telecom Egypt will spend up to $300 million on the expansion, which is called the "Golden
Pyramid" project. The project will enhance telephone services, especially in greater Cairo, but
also in the city of Alexandria, as well as the Nile Delta and Upper Egypt regions. "We have
worked closely with Telecom Egypt's Chairman, Abdel Fattah Abu Srei, and Minister Soliman
Metwally, to identify the best solutions for Telecom Egypt's needs," said Tarek Hemaily,
managing director of Lucent's global service provider business in Egypt.

"We're delighted that Lucent's world-leading switching and wireless access technologies will be
at the heart of this expansion," said Abdel Fattah Abu Srei. "As we move into the next century,
advanced telecommunications facilities will be a key element in the economic prospects of all
nations. Egypt is no exception to this. We intend to create an infrastructure that will generate
prosperity for the nation, and put Egypt at the forefront of the information age."

The Golden Pyramid project will use Lucent's 5ESSr-2000 Switching System and its wireless
access solutions -- the first time such a technology has been used in Egypt. The technology
allows individual households and businesses to connect to the PSTN (public switched telephone
network) with a wireless connection from the local exchange, removing the need to install a costly
wired connection.

Wireless solutions are also quick and cost-effective to deploy, provide ample scope to expand
the number of individual subscribers, and allow subscribers to upgrade their service as necessary.
Because Lucent backs the use of open industry interfaces, such systems can also be used to
connect subscribers to switching equipment provided by other telecommunications
manufacturers.

"We are looking forward to working closely with Telecom Egypt throughout the duration of this
project, and we hope to continue this relationship into the future," said Hemaily.

Lucent Technologies designs, builds and delivers a wide range of public and private networks,
communications systems and software, data networking systems, business telephone systems and
microelectronic components. Bell Labs is the research and development arm for the company.
