Sam, not to start a long debate suffice it to say that for whatever reason Egypt, did not want to get involved at the calling level with one of the large overcharging behemonths....

Sam, this is not about technology, it is about contracts. The technology has to be there, of course, but Digitcom can not compete with Lucent for technology, nor does it want to. Digitcom uses top of the line technology from other vendors, such as NMSS and Nortel, that are just as good if not better than anyone else's. But that is not the reason Digitcom gets these contracts.

Put yourself in the position of a director of the national telecom of Egypt, or Russia, or Indonesia, or any other emerging country. You need Lucent, AT&T, or whomever to come in and help you install infrastructure, fiber optics, satellite, whatever. But you don't want these guys hanging around and merging with you, because they are so big they will gobble you up, and pretty soon you have to march to their bidding, their standards, their pricing structure. And it is not only your private customers that have to pay the price, but the entire nation's communications is now under the control of a giant US corporation, and by the way your national defense relies on you for communications as well.

You do have one problem, though. The national economy has been suffering, and you have been told to deregulate, and look for private companies that you can partner with, but in a way that preserves your independence and supports national economic, political, and military soveirgnty.

Who are you gonna call? Lucent? AT&T? Or a small company that has no desire or ability to take you over, but who has the latest technology, and is willing to partner with you and grow with you into these uncharted waters of deregulation? You decide...
