I don't know, there could well be a panic. They(CNBC) said so far most the selling was by the funds & institutional investors. So far, the rank & file is holding tough. You are right, if they get scared!!!!!!!!!!
I think what many are not looking at is that many of the small holders are now being laid off(because of lowered earnings by most companies), with no better job to come- in the near term future. some will even get in trouble(due to heavy debt levels in the US), & though they may wish to hold, will have to sell all or some of their holdings. I've been there,
I had no choice, last time around, I had to sell-some. I had to take that big hit on taxes. Others will get in bad shape(though, I won't this time-I hope)this time. One can say they will keep investing in the same things at the same % & never stop for the next the next XX years, but if you have heavy debt, a kid or two, and are out of work........what choice do you have? You starve the kid, take the money out of the IRA, or stick up a 7-11.At the very least, some will have to stop investing the way they are investing for a while.
