Great concept, but does it really work in the servers that it is implimented? Are they saving money on Service calls? Don't get me wrong. I am not attacking the Killer Rudedog.<G> I used to work on a techsupport line and would have loved to have some of these abilities. I know today with Remote Control products, the greatest being LapLink of course, you can do a lot of diagnostics for software problems. But doing the same for hardware I have a hard time believing? If they can make hardware that survives a crash why not make the whole box out of that material. If you know what I mean. Like those black boxes on planes.

On a different topic. I find it interesting that many people who invest get an either or mind set. Either DELL or CPQ. INTC or AMD. Investing in CPQ is not the same as saying DELL is going to die. and visa versa. Each has it's qualities, good and bad. The question is whether they wil weather the bad times. I will bet money that both will be around five years from now and anyone who invested in either will be quite happy.

Just a Rambling Balloon.

For the Thread's information:

The Compaq server management product has been refined quite substantially in the last few years.

The standard product ships integral to all Servers and is called Integrated Remote Console. IRC provides Remote Server Management either sync or async (in-band / out-of-band).

The optional product is the "Remote Insight Board". It provides far more control of the server than IRC as well as the ability to store a failure of the server graphically. i.e. - You can replay the last few moments of console activity at or about failure time, (like a flight data recorder). This product is also accessible when the server is completely down as it is battery backed up with it's own modem.

Integrated Remote Console:
compaq.com
(This document is a bit dated but still current. It is now standard across the server range).

Remote Insight Board:
compaq.com

General Server Management Information:

Regards,
H

CPQ and Intel have been working for a while on a chipset standard which would allow a remote access (via either modem or web) even when the machine is 'down'..............

Why all the hype on this? This is old obsolete technology. I'm afraid I'll age myself here, but DEC had this back in 77-78 time frame with the remote access console on the PDP 11/70 as the first and it was available from day one on the first VAX 11/780. These remote access features were discontinued years ago do to the fact that all intermittent failures could be diagnosed from the running system though hardware error logs or memory dumps from crashes. As for having down system access it was found unnecessary as the diagnostics were always good enough to get a downed system diagnosed and running.

On second thought the PDP 11/70 may not have been the first. I don't know much about DEC 10 or DEC 20 history so it is possible they may have been using this technology on those even before the 11/70.
