OT Re: That's exactly the point ... if it can happen to a President, it can happen to any of us.

On the other hand, let's not forget that the potentially impeachable offenses stem from lying under oath in the Paula Jones case, where the President was charged with sexual harassment. True, anyone could be accused of harassment, but not everyone will lie about it under oath. Let's not let the hysteria and repetition that "it's just about sex" distract us from what this really is about: lying under oath, obstruction of justice, and abuse of power. The fact that the issue negatively impacts the markets (and therefore our pocketbooks) is a pain, but I don't blame Ken Starr for investigating crimes. I blame the person who is responsible for the acts themselves.

There's a big difference. With the President, there was so much smoke brewing over Whitewater, Paula Jones, the campaign fundraising, and now the Monica Lewinsky scandal that there was bound to be a fire somewhere. Most of us don't even have enough smoke above us to set off a smoke detector.

Lay off Ken Starr. He's getting the bum rap only because he chooses to uncover things which may be too ugly for a nation spoiled by a strong economy to stomach. Plus, Ken Starr had no choice but to dig as hard as he could given that Clinton was stonewalling him every step of the way. If you were appointed to investigate the shady dealings of the most powerful man on earth, wouldn't you be paranoid as well?

Sure wished he had 'fessed up in the first place and allowed us to avoid what will inevitably happen now.

Greg,

Had Clinton "fessed up in the first place" his political opponents would have paralyzed his presidency on character issues.

Many of the greatest leaders of this country were big-time philanderers. The press and Congress used to have the common sense not to talk about it. It takes a lot of testosterone (except for the case of Jimmy Carter) to get elected President.
