jacob, just a word to the wise. intel's announcement was good. however, it isn't indicative of an industry turn, imho - at least not yet.

here's why.

1. cpq worked through inventory and cut orders - 2 q was lower than it otherwise would have been. therefore, sequential growth is somewhat exaggerated.

2. basic seasonal affects. back to school and christmas are approach (btw, 2nd half of the years are ALWAYS better than the first half ;-)

3. intel wrote down inventory so more profit moved to the bottom line.

these are all one time events that significantly impact intel. has the market turned? maybe. time will tell.

as for 1996, i can tell you that the dram market didn't hit bottom then. the ONLY reason prices went up was b/c of ione time inventory holdbacks. w/o the korean decision to hold back inventory, intel or no intel, dram would have continued to be a disaster - though probably not as bad as now. completely UNRELATED to intel.

hey, on another note, will y2k improve box sales are decrease them? some say more money to y2k = less to boxes. others say boxes are the solution to y2k. appreciate everyone's opinion AND analysis.

Re: the INTC effect

In the March '96 timeframe, INTC begins its move up while AMAT trends down for the next 6 months, as shown in this chart:

Looks similar to what has happened over the past 40 days. Time will tell if AMAT makes a similar move 5 1/2 months from now
