Actually the first I've heard about them was at an Internet confrence when several Web Masters were talking about ebay. I'm more of a user then a developer right now so I decided to check out the company(as a possible stock buy) since the web masters/programmers spoke so highly of it. I'm just not sure yet how most end users would or would not use ebay vs On Sale and other auction houses.

It is only a matter of time till the other "big players" give Ebay a run for the money... Ebay has a huge head start.. and usually the first out of the gate is dominant for a long time.. (yahoo, aol..)

New sellers may be enticed buy the "free" auctions..and shoppers will go to these "new" auctions cuz there may be some bargains there..
