RIVA TNT at Best Buy for $169.99- How can this be? Wasnt the standard price for any TNT board to be around $250? The Graphics BlasterTNT with 16 megs is only $170. Does this bode well for 3DFX?

Pierre-X said: Sorry to rain on the parade,. . .

Who are you kidding? You obviously take some form of perverted pleasure in raining on parades. At least 90% of your posts are exactly that.

No apology needed. . . . none accepted.

Pierre-X, How can you seriously say that the Babbages announcement is not fantastic news?

<<Nobody buys video cards at Babbages. The stores don't target that market whatsoever. The overwhelming majority of their sales are games, both for PC and console.>>

Well now they are going to target TDFX cards and TDFX games. They are going to set aside a section that puts them in your face. Specially trained sales people wearing 3Dfx shirts. The hottest games with the best hardware that compose the best entertainment platform for games. If your in the store you already have a PC, all you need is the salesman to help you choose the right card(s) and then you pick the games.

<<The point of the special 3Dfx scheme is to help Babbages sell games, not graphics boards.>>

Of course this is not the point but even if it were they are selling 3Dfx games, not Intel, or nVidia or ATI. Branding, marketing at its' best. We don't make the games but we get all the credit/association. If customers want a cool game and a trained salesperson tells him that he needs a 3Dfx board to run it and that all the new hot games that come out run much better on this board, if price is a problem then for $99 you can get a V1, etc.

<<That said, undoubtedly such limeliting will move 3Dfx product, but that's not where the volume is.>>

Volume comes from awareness, quality and customer satisfaction. I really don't care if customers learn of 3Dfx at Babbages and go to EB (oops they might also do it) or some other place to buy the card.

<<We can revisit this after it's a done deal and find out what really happens.>>

Unfortunately, this is your only valid point. The devil is in the details. However, Babbages has decided that this is a good way for them to sell more games/cards and to make money. Given the premiums on shelf space, they have the most to lose. I'm sure they didn't make this decision lightly. They, like we, are hoping to have a wonderful 3Dfx Christmas. Joe C.
