To All: My wife just returned from "the race for the cure," an event held earlier this am in Seattle at the U.W. campus, in honor of breast cancer victims, and to donate money for research toward a cure. Al Gore was to give a speech after the race, in the campus stadium. About 20,000 people entered or stayed for the festivities, far in excess of what was anticipated. After the race, in anticipation of his speech, cancer patients and those who are in remission or cured, lined up in the stands next to the podium. These stands were facing directly into the sun. The idea was for him to come out and shake hands with them, then give a brief speech. As they waited and waited, many in treatment, they shouted "we want Al." He came in, and passed right by the stands. His speech went on for 30 minutes, although it seemed longer. It was extremely hot in the stands. As several of the patients tried to get off the stands and out of the sun, they were held back by the secret service. People started yelling, "they are in treatment, they're sick." The agents held their fingers to their lips indicating for folks to shut up. Several agents were heard to yell back, "It's not protocol." They were packed together like sardines. Gore finally finished, and the patients were allowed to get out of the stands, a significant number needing assistance from family and friends. More political speeches were given, one by Patty Murray being notable. Afterwards the sponsors apologized carefully for what had just occurred. This event was an important one, and nothing should take away from the efforts made by organizers and the intent of the program. But the incredible selfishness and insensitivity of the political folks shined through.
