Elmer:

I know the Alpha 21264 architecture well. I know that the the Alpha 21264 is currently the champ in Spec95 (int/fpu). People tell me that the K7 architecture is similar to Alpha 21264. Thus it is a no brainer to conclude that the K7 logic core will outperform PII core.
................................SPECint95...........SPECfp95
Alpha 21264-530MHz--30------------------50-----
PII-300-----------------11.9----------------8.82----
PII-300-----------------13.9----------------11.2----
PII-400-----------------15.8----------------12.4----
PII-450-----------------17.2----------------12.9----
PII-500(extrapolated)---18.5----------------13.1----
PII-550(extrapolated----19.5----------------13.3----

It looks like the FPU is petering out at 500MHz with 100MHz FSB. The reason is probably due to the FP core couldn't keep up with the amount of data processed at high speed.

If you look at Intel roadmap, Intel will introduce in 1999

Low End Desktop:
Q1-Q2: CeleronA 366MHz (66MHz FSB)
Q3-Q4: CeleronA 400MHz (100MHz FSB)

Mid End Desktop:
Q1-Q2 (starting March): Katmai 450MHz-500MHz (100MHz FSB)
Q3-Q4: Coppermine >533MHz (0.18um version of Katmai) @ 133MHz FSB
Q3-Q4: Cascade >600MHz (0.18um Katmai with integrated 256K L2 cache) .......@133MHz FSB

High-End Server:
Q1-Q2: Xeon 450MHz
Q2: Xeon >500MHz called Tanner

There is also a variety of PII core chips with added feature such as Portola and Coloma. Do you see any P7 core anywhere? Katmai is
already selling $800+ for a 500MHz. Will P7 core be rushed and
introduced early and sell for $2000/pop? Intel already committed a
whole line of PII core for 1999 and is already confusing to many people. To introduce the P7 core would killed the PII line and Intel ain't stupid to do this. If they do release it watch for late 1999. K7 will be released in Q1-Q2 1999 and it looks like it will challenge and top Katmai and Xeon.

<<You don't know the whole picture Max, you just think you do.>>

It is you who don't know the whole picture. You make claim that AMD
would never top Intel in performance. That is a stupid statement
since there is no timebound to your claim. I said that the K7 would
be the world fastest X86 chip by the time it releases. Even if the K7
holds the record for 1 month by the time it releases I would have been correct. I have done my research comparing the Alpha, K7, and PII. You haven't especially on your Willamette. I don't look at Willamette because its release date is not in the timeline of the release of the K7.
