TELECOMS: KDD SET
TO BACK CDMA2000
08/05/98
Network Briefing

Full Text

Japan's Kokusai Denshin Denwa Co (KDD)
may be set to add its weight to the
equipment vendors and carriers backing the
cdma2000, third generation wireless
technology. KDD, Japan's former monopoly
international carrier, will begin testing US
developed cdma2000 in March 1999,
according to sources quoted in Japan's
Nihon Keizai Shimbun. KDD plans to begin
testing a prototype system using the North
American CDMA2000 standard for core
cellular phone equipment next spring.

The shift to cdma2000 comes just a month
into the company's trials of wideband code
division multiple access (W-CDMA)
systems. WCDMA is the next generation
standard accepted by European standards
body ESTI earlier this year. The standard is
backed backed by European vendors Nokia
Oy and LM Telefon Ericsson AG as well as
Japanese carrier NTT Corp.

Should KDD opt for the US cdma2000
technology it will be a blow to the European
initiative, which has faced strong criticism in
the US for not being backward compatible
with cdmaOne and PCS systems already
prevalent across the country. KDD says its
will enter the advanced cellular phone
business in fiscal 2000. KDD is expected to
join with Toyota Motor Corp affiliation
Nippon Idou Tsushin Corp in order to win
one of the three available licenses for
third-generation mobile services when they
become available from the Ministry of Posts
and Telecommunications. Toyota is a strong
advocate of the US standard.

<<Also just read that opposition parties will permit the LP to proceed with bank bail out. Whew. A relief.>>

That's important! Where did you see that? Is there any reform involved with the bailout, or is it just keeping the sick barely afloat?
