From WSJ, draw your own conclusions...

MRV Communications is a
Chatsworth, California, network
supplier that billed itself as a
mini-Cisco Systems, and claimed 34
consecutive quarters of earnings
increases. Meanwhile, the company's
cash flow was negative, suggesting
that the firm was actually an
aggressive practitioner of one
accounting trick now receiving SEC
scrutiny: MRV took large writeoffs
when it made acquisitions, and that
had the effect of artificially inflating
profits later on. Acquiring a business
called Fibronics for about $23 million,
for instance, MRV took merger
charges totaling $25 million. Last
month, MRV warned that earnings
would disappoint, and Roberts told
clients to close out any short sales at
$7, for a 76% gain.
