Pat,

The first impeachment was of a Federal judge in 1800 + a few years. He had committed NO crime. He took the bench while drunk and used the Lord's name in vain. This was a misdemeanor using the Founders' definition which is acting in a way that is unfitting for the position one holds. His demeanor was bad.

The Slickster's demeanor is certainly lacking in this affair. He broke Federal law by having an affair with a subordinate, doesn't matter if she was willing. Then he broke the law by lying under oath. He broke his Oath of Office in both of these instances and every time he lied to his Cabinet (It is also illegal to lie to Federal officials).

He will resign on Jan. 21 (saving Gore's quickly dwindling chances for two full terms) or will be given the boot by the Senate soon after.

Remember that Impeachment is only an indictment. The Senate will determine whether he should be removed. To leave him in office they will have to find that he did NOT perjure himself and further they will have to find that he has acted properly in office. An improper act in office whether technically illegal or not is still a misdemeanor under the Founders' definition.
