Right, and by getting Gore into the slot before Jan 20, he also eliminates Gore's ability to compete in 2004. He's no dummy, he's a presidentially inclined Senator but others may see Gore as their man and want the opposite. Interesting political fight. In either case its a forgone conclusion that a presidential liability (no pun intended) exists and must be dealt with.

I would take Gephardt over Gore any day.

In his early career he was actually fairly conservative. He has moved progressively left but to stay viable in the Democrat party you would have to. Maybe his heart is still in the right place.
