If your examples were clearly stated in the employee handbook, then that only confirms that the employer mistreated these people and fired them. What kind of policy says you are fired if you ask another employee out on a date? It is not public policy. The employer just made it up. Blame the stupid employer.

By the way, it doesn't say anywhere that the White House policy is that if you have sex with a subordinate you are fired. Why? Because it is a stupid policy in a land noted for liberty.

You may believe that dating or dirty jokes don't belong in the workplace, but that is just your opinion. In the U.S., there are no laws forbidding these things because the Constitution protects the right of assembly and free speech. You might not like it, but our country is founded on such principles.

Regarding Ms. Flynn in the armed forces: Should she have been discharged for disobeying a direct order? Maybe. But the fact is she was not discharged for dating, or for having sex.

If you think employers should tolerate "no nonsense:", well, I for sure wouldn't want to be your company recruiting or HR department.
I am sure you are a fine guy, but I wouldn't like your over-regulated workplace. It is bad enough already.

By the way, I think the president should resign. I voted for him twice, but he lied to the country and inevitably caused this crisis. Ken Starr is no saint, and has done much wrong, but Bill Clinton needs to take responsibility for his actions and lies. I believe he should finally do an honorable act, and resign.

The main reason is those companies face big lawsuits if they don't act promptly. Of course, the Federal Government doesn't always live by laws it passes...witness the lawsuits on HMOs but not on Medicare for denied care.
