The short interest as of mid-September will probably be published early next week. As of mid-August, there were approximately 7.8 million shares short out of a total of 105 million shares for TLC and BROD combined. Approximately 7% short -- a relatively small percentage compared to early 1997.

These numbers included arbitrage positions in which TLC was shorted to buy BROD or TRD (Tribune's debt exchangeable for TLC common stock).
