Kary,

Dont get me wrong. I didnt say the IBM didnt have products with this technology available to the public. In fact much of what I have used on their Ethernet and ATM is very good compared to the competition. BUT, they are not perceived by the industry as a leader to follow in this arena. The industry looks toward companies like Cisco, 3Com, Lucent, Nortel (with Bay inside) to set directions - even though many times they are not the first to come up with it or develop/push it.

In fact, I find that Cisco is one of the slowest to come to market on much of the the new solutions, but once the either develop it into their product line or buy out the leading little company that did innovate, then the IT industry listens to the Cisco Pide-Piper. (Hmmm - sounds a lot like MSFT).

But, IBM is not in the same pecking order to set the next standard. They will be a great follower.

The one area that IBM is really a leader that the industry looks to them for setting standards and guidance is E-Commerce solutions and technologies (including the secured transaction solutions like SET). People clearly look to IBM for these "Business" level technologies and concepts.

It is nice to see though that IBM is moving to developing their own hardware and not OEMing. Hopefully their networking products will continue to be very good or even better.
