Marcos,

I regard EC as a friend. I have spoken up for him in the past and did so again this time.

However,

Each thread establishes its own rules and operating procedures. Many of the mining threads are free for alls in terms of what is acceptable and what is not. The GPM has always seemed to be to be more of an information thread with discussion limited to direct comment on specific technical points.

EC didn't just break the rules, he trod upon them. And like his other 'violent' excursions onto foreign threads he has received significant backlash. When he was escorted off of the PFG thread it was for much the same thing. I forget what he called the Web Mistress, but it was interesting.

A right to free speech is not a right to destroy. I believe we are dealing with one group's attempt to maintain a method of discussion against a force not at all interested in the established rules. If he feels the way he does he can say that stuff on his own thread and reference it on the gold thread. People who sing in the library are asked to leave, that doesn't mean they can not sing.

EC brought this on himself. We have defended him. He is facing a suspension rather than expulsion. I'll be glad to see him back. But if he comes back on the gold tread I do wish he'd try and follow the rules. If he wants to sing....he has his own thread.

And if INFO_DART and others contributed to the change in the terms of his departure.....suspension rather than expulsion, I offer them sincere thanks. EC is not a racist. I didn't read that in his post. But I have been reading him for a long time. I don't contest anyones opinion on the matter. I am just thankful this has been brought to a less drastic conclusion.

regards,

mnmuench

But to construe my comments here as an endorsement of racism is to misread them, I believe that if you take a deep breath and reread them you will realise that.

To tell you the truth, I never thought that for one moment, ever. Perhaps, I was not clear enough in what I was saying, and will try in the future to be more clear in my writing.

It is my considered opinion that if the worst racist you ever meet is Eric Charters, then you are home free and in the clear.

I've met much worse. It is not apparent to those who meet me that I am an Arab. Normally, people think I'm Italian, Greek, or Spanish. Upon finding out in conversation that I was an Arab, an otherwise pleasant person, will totally change their attitude and get up to walk away. This is sometimes worse, in my opinion, because there is no mistaking that person's opinion.

I believe he was speaking figuratively or metaphorically or whatever - actually I don't know the literary term for it, but imho he was not literally advocating genocide.....

Some people like the "shock value" of what they say. They like to dig deep under someone's skin. Perhaps, they enjoy the reaction they get from others. I am usually quite tolerant of opinion that is based in fact, and that is the problem I had with Eric, in that his comments on this topic were not knowledgeable. I admit I am at a disadvantage, as I have only limited experience with Eric.

He has got to dumb it down for those who don't know him or are incapable of understanding, this is true.

I have seen other posts of Eric's that I found thoughtful and knowledgeable. I certainly hope that he returns to this.
