Rather than a backlash, the Democrats will turn up the heat on expose's of politicians' private lives. They may also extend this to their senior aide's in order to tar by association. The net effect is to try to reduce voter turnout on both sides.

The scorched earth policy may backfire on Clinton in the short run. If there was a possibility of him cutting a deal with the judicial committee, it may have disappeared. In an impeachment hearing, all of the evidence will get a once over. They could also call in his aide's and lawyers for cross examination, as well as Monica and the others. This could be another Thomas. They may reach the same result of a censure with additional sanctions, but use it to weaken him.
