Ascend, Alcatel pair to create DSL-IP gateway

By Tim Greene
Network World Fusion, 9/17/98

Ascend Communications and Alcatel are teaming
up to develop a gateway between DSL access
lines and IP carrier networks.

As part of a strategic alliance announced today,
the two companies will also develop a high-speed
router on a card. The companies did not specify
into what hardware chassis the card would fit.

Beyond the product collaboration, the two
companies trumpeted the business advantages of
the alliance.

Ascend is the leading maker of carrier-grade
frame relay and ATM switches, and Alcatel is one
of the top voice switch manufacturers outside the
U.S. With Ascend's deep inroads into ISP
networks and Alcatel's penetration of nationwide
phone networks in Europe and elsewhere around
the world, the companies are making much of the
chance they have to expand sales.

The gateway, described as being deployed in
conjunction with Alcatel DSL systems, would
presumably connect DSL traffic from customer
DSL lines to a routed or switched IP
infrastructure. That would enable carriers to offer
DSL customers connections to more than one
destination, such as a connection to the Internet as
well as a connection to a corporate network

ACS Innovations, Inc. Revolutionizes the Way Long Distance and International Calls Are Made With the Introduction of the Compro
Ezfone
September 17, 1998 SANTA CLARA, Calif., Sept. 16 /PRNewswire/
via NewsEdge Corporation -- ACS
Innovations, Inc., a leading manufacturer of
innovative computer and consumer
electronic products, today announces
October 1, 1998 shipment of its first Internet
telephony card, the Compro Ezfone. The
Compro Ezfone is an ISA card that allows
users to make calls over the Internet as
easily as a regular telephone call, taking
advantage of the Internet for long distance
and international calls. The Compro Ezfone
card effortlessly plugs into an available ISA
slot to provide a low cost alternative to
conventional long distance and international
calls. It will begin shipping in September
1998. The Ezfone MSRP is $149, and the
Ezfone starter kit, with two units, has an
MSRP of $249. The Ezfone Pro, with
exapnded features, has an MSRP of $199
each.

The Compro Ezfone is a breakthrough in
technology and quality. It uses the power of
the PC to provide faster connections, better
sound quality, and minimal delays. It is an
ISA card that is easy to install and requires
only a PC with Internet access, a simple
software installation, and a regular
telephone. The Compro Ezfone telephony
solution uses a powerful 40 MIPS processor
that produces high quality full duplex audio
compression and decompression. To greatly
improve the quality of the Internet calls, the
Compro Ezfone uses hardware compression
technology compliant with the ITU G.723
algorithm delivering quality performance at
the lowest bit-rate. G.723.1 is implemented
by the Compro Ezfone on the 40MIPS
processor that delivers high quality audio
compression and decompression. The result
is a high sound quality, with a delay
averaging at 200ms, compared with a two or
three second delay with other Internet
Telephony products.

Ezfone goes beyond other Internet
telephony products by allowing users to call
regular telephones and cellular phones. All an
Ezfone user needs to do to call someone
without an Ezfone, is subscribe to a
worldwide network of H.323 compliant
Gateway servers. Once the user dials the
Gateway and enters his or her password, the
Gateway connects to the regular telephone
automatically. The cost of this service is still
far less than the cost of international calling,
and the Gateway network continues to
expand worldwide. More information can be
found at www.acscompro.com.
