HONG KONG, CHINA, 1998 SEP 17 (NB). One of the largest cable TV stations in China - Guangdong CATV - will build a multi-service network using Cisco [NASDAQ:CSCO] routing and access equipment.

Once implemented, GDCATV's network will enable the station to deliver integrated MPEG-2 (Motion Picture Experts Group type 2) video, H.729 audio, and LAN (local area network) data traffic over a single IP (Internet Protocol) network to subscribers in 21 cities in Guangdong. Ten cities are already online including Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Zhongshan and Dongguan.

GDCATV's SDH (synchronous digital hierarchy) fiber optic backbone is capable of connecting up to three million users. The station offers services such as video-on-demand, business information feeds, online multi-player games, stock transactions, karaoke, music-on-demand, and videoconferencing.

The system will be deployed in two phases. Phase one includes five Cisco 12008 gigabit switch routers, eight 7500 multi-protocol routers and 10 3600, and 5300 remote access servers. Phase two will see the delivery of 10 additional 7500 routers and 11 extra 3600 access servers.
