Taiwan's telecommunications market has undergone rapid growth in recent years, with extremely high demand for bandwidth and high quality transmission. The Directorate General of Telecommunications in Taiwan has been working on the development of a policy framework for future allocation of frequency spectrum and adoption of Local Multipoint Distribution Service (LMDS). This trial network will be used as a ''case study'' and will play a key role in establishing Nortel and the Taiwan National University as leaders in broadband wireless access technology. The trial network will use Nortel Reunion broadband ATM wireless access solution, which has the capability to offer any combination of voice, data, Internet, and video conferencing services over high speed wireless links. The wireless links provide traffic from 64 kilobit per second data to E-1 services and 10 BASE-T services. The trial network with Taiwan National University will use Nortel Reunion broadband wireless access solution to test applications such as: distance learning, videoconference, multimedia digital libraries as well as telemedicine. The trial network will have LMDS connections between the Taiwan National University main campus and two branches installed at other faculties. The Nortel Reunion broadband wireless access portfolio uses radio base station equipment to interface with wireline backbone networks, transmission, customer premise equipment and integrated network management. Nortel's Reunion broadband wireless access portfolio, which is currently being commercially deployed throughout the world, is part of a complete family of Nortel fixed wireless access solutions. /For further information: Luanne Kruse, Nortel, (972) 349-8028, lkruse(at)broadbandnetworks.com; Teresa Chow, Nortel, + 852 2100 2193 teresachow(at)nortel.com; Peter Janecek, Nortel, (905) 863-6251, peter.janecek(at)nortel.com; Or visit Nortel's web-site at www.nortel.com/
