I know AV isn't Compaq's main concern nor should it be in my opinion. But given that Compaq does own AV, Compaq should allow AV enough independence to develop.

Who knows how things will be in the future. AV might Compaq biggest asset in 10 years.

S.K. -
Great post. CPQ has stated publicly several times that they are not in the software business. They have a lot of good technologists both at Tandem and at DEC. What is the best way for CPQ to leverage that asset? Use it to create a market where CPQ's hardware wins.

IF AV generated a billion in revenue, or 2 billion, which I regard as virtually impossible, it would be a huge success story in its own right, and in the context of internet companies. This would, however, be relatively unimportant in terms of overall CPQ revenue.

CPQ needs to stick to their knitting and execute on their core business plan. If they do that we will all be quite happy with the results, no matter what happens to AV. If they don't do that, AV won't help much. JMHO...

Sofa K.,

>> I think you're missing a valuable element here. Compaq is a hardware company. <<

I thin the above statement, after reading everything below it says that Compaq is a services company, not a H/W company. They provide "at least" 3 services:

- Hardware
- Support/Installation/Consultation, etc....
- Internet Ventures such as AV.
