SKARN The term is generally reserved for rocks composed nearly entirely of lime-bearing silicates and derived from nearly pure limestones and dolomites into which large amounts of Si, Al, Fe, and Mg have been introduced.

--from Dictionary of Geological Terms

These deposits are usually small and spotty. They result from ore bearing solution comming from below and finding good host rocks in the limestone they invade. The heat associated with these fluids is probably what produced the marble also. Marble is metamorphic and so is the skarn. They are not usually known as big gold producers but rather tend to silver, lead, zinc and copper. That does not mean that they can't contain gold.
