Eric, thanks for your post on Apple's sales gains. We've got the retail numbers, which are especially important to Apple due to the inclusion of mail order. Many "pros" order Macs through the catalogs and thus are counted as retail sales. I think we can expect education sales to be up 20% since that's what the independent company predicted after completing its survey of educational institutions. It was something like 30% market share to 36% or so. Of course, with all the grants and such, the total pie is bigger so maybe we're talking a 30% gain in sales. That leaves the Pro line and the PBs. We have to think PBs are up from last quarter and now it looks like the Pro desktops are doing well too. Phil, if I'm reading your post correctly, I have to say that I don't think Apple could manufacture 248,000 iMacs by the end of August. Weren't we figuring about 60,000 on hand at 8/15 and at most 50k produced a week by the Sacramento plant? The nice thing is that overall US demand will be met before the quarter is over, ie no shortage going into October. Of course demand will then pick up big-time for Christmas. The other nice thing is that Apple has done a great job getting the units to the most needed spots--the favored retailers on 8/15, higher education the next week, etc. It really is an excellent situation and as you've noted, earnings expectations keep rising. Companies that get momentum can keep it up for a long time, with surprising results. We could use some reports from K-12 on whether schools are getting their AIO and iMac orders filled in a timely fashion. I can't believe Jobs got a "minutes long" standing ovation in France. Fabulous. Bought more AAPL today, Marc
