Viagra proves a winner for Asian men Hong Kong Standard September 19, 1998 STORY: VIAGRA _ the best-selling anti-impotence drug in America _ has been found effective in clinical trials on 500 men from Asia, including Hong Kong, according to a report released in Singapore yesterday. But the report said 42 per cent of patients had reported side-effects after taking the blue pill. The result of the tests was announced at the fourth Asian Congress of Urology. The trials were in three groups. Hong Kong was grouped with Thailand and Indonesia. About 130 patients suffering from persistent erectile dysfunction were chosen to try the drug for four months. A control group of 128 patients was also chosen to take a placebo. The result was that sildenafil citrate _ Viagra _ was found to be an ''effective, well tolerated oral treatment for Asian men with erectile dysfunction''. An overwhelming number of patients (81 per cent) reported an improvement after 12 weeks of treatment as against 28 per cent who took the placebo. Fifteen per cent reported flushing spells after taking the pill and 13 per cent suffered headaches. Another 9 per cent of patients suffered dizziness, 6 per cent rhinitis and 6 per cent abnormal vision. Only 12 per cent of the control group patients reported side-effects. Slightly better results, with 86 per cent reporting an improvement, were recorded in the group working with men from Singapore, Malaysia and Philippines. A Taiwan group trial was continuing. Pfizer general manager in Hong Kong Stephen Leung Kwok-keung said the result of the clinical test was submitted to the Department of Health yesterday. But he was unsure when the pill might be approved and on the market. Countries including the United States, Australia, New Zealand and Thailand have already approved sale of the drug. The Department of Health's Pharmaceuticals Registration Committee was this week analysing data. ''When sufficient scientific data supporting the safety and effectiveness of Viagra have been collected, the committee will consider granting approval,'' a spokesman said. hkstandard.com
