Jeff: fastest 2D/3D chip

I am curious though, as they suggest that we will really pull away in our technology lead in '99, have they even lived up to the last statement of "Banshee will be fastest 2D and 3D chip out there

I think the answer is "No, but close enough." I think they expected to release Banshee before TNT. Judging from TNT's initial problems it may have been rushed out the door, and it may have caught them by surprise. In their defense, Banshee appears to have the fastest 2D (according to some reviews), and it's 3D is fastest in single-textured games. That's pretty impressive for such a low cost part.

The important part of your question is about their credibility and their plans to widen the performance gap in 1999. I think part of what Ballard was saying in his interview was targeted at those of us (myself included) who thought an important part of not revealing the company's roadmap was to prevent competitors from seeing it. He said that they know what their competitors' roadmaps contain, and vice-versa.

That being the situation he's in just about the best possible position to know if he's going to be hearing himself quoted in a shareholder lawsuit. I for one believe he's being straightforward on this. Before he was saying that 1999 would be the year of 3Dfx. Great, but what does it mean precisely? Well, he's told us. Now that he's made less ambiguous statements about 1999 I feel more confident counting on it.
