Wayne...

Guess this is the price we have paid to enjoy a high standard of living for so many years ...heavily subsidized health care and education.

Wayne it's the lush salaries, indexed pensions, trips abroad, and legions of unproductive government employees that caused the problem.

Alberta trimmed a lot of fat from our Health Care system and it is working fine by my family. Mother received two artificial hips. Father, two Heart surgeries. Here in Alberta. Not a Perfect system, full of stress, but it works and it's a system we can afford.

...but these debt problems will take a long time to sort out and BOTH countries are still excellent places to live in the meantime.

It's only by the efforts of concerned individuals that the government is reluctantly reforming. Things don't just sort themselves out.

Help us carry the message. Now that the water is lapping at the gunnels people are starting to wake up. Lets vote to reform the government. Abolish the wasteful sennet (spl?).

I think that should be pointed out here because most Canadians are proud or their country and enjoying a great standard of living relative to many other places throughout the world.

You must not be a traveled man.

1)Italy better pizza, summers full of vacation at the beach.
2) Germany; my friend travels every year for 5 weeks. He works as a mechanic and loves Germany.
3) Switzerland, must be a slum.
4) Australia, another hard life. All Australians and New Zealanders want to immigrate to beloved Canada. ROFL

Why should we be proud we inherited this standard of living and it can leave us just as quickly.

Wayne, The feds proudly try to make that point. It is somewhere on the critical web adversaries of the Feds and Provinces.
Remember that US States are forbidden by law to have deficits and they have no crown/state corporations.(who runs state lotteries?)

Most canadian provinces have huge debts and they all have crown corporations with huge debts.

Someone added up all the debts of all the federal and provincial governments and all crown corporation and came up with the 1.5-1.6 times the per capita debt.
Why do we have 15% sales tax?, if not for debt services.
In the states they also do not get equalization payments, but federal
programs are done by states with fed $$.

The 50-60% extra per capita debt is sad but true.
