Why don't you make a list in your next post of the things that you want to see re: policy choices and positions on issues and let's see how they match up to mine and we can get an idea of what our real issues related issue difference really are and then we might see the answer to perplexity. I'll list what are important to me:

1) I don't approve of the lifestyle and I don't agree that it should be ok to re-define marriage or blur the concept of marriage; but what I do support in this area and it is the only thing I support is sexual preference blindness when it comes to job security. I don't think someone should lose their job because they are gay. That said, I do agree that groups like the Boy Scouts should be able to say no to hiring a gay as a Scout leader. In this area, I'm really much more in the conservative camp with my disagreement mostly over things like firings in a corporate setting if someone is gay when it has nothing to do with anything they do for livelihood. I don't think gays should be forced back into the closet as I think it is healthier for them to be able to be honest about themselves with others. I'm against much of the agenda that pushs for more than this. I do think that health coverage for longterm partners should be available as health insurance is as important as a job these days with our system of health care, but I don't want it called marriage or anything like that. Call it gay partners longterm health coverage; whatever. This is a tough issue. I prefer that our society be an inclusive society, not exlusive to an "in" group of hypocritical so-called "good" people that unmasked often are pretty bad when hidden behavior is unmasked, such as Hyde's. The outrage I have over him and others is that they set themselves up as better and more priviledged and set policy to exclude others and then you find out they are bad folks themselves.

2) Social Security - this is a purely middle class program that shifts some tax money to the middle class from the upper class. It was supposed to be self-supporting, but it now is a pie redistribution program. It is socialism and I support this brand of socialism as it has worked well in European democracies and helps solve some of the real dangerous viciousness of pure capitalism that destroy completely the have-not portions in a purely capitalistic system. I don't support capitalism unless it is regulated in a way to spread the wealth more evenly to the people that contribute to generating the wealth. The capitalistic argument is kind of a support for a system of slavery. I own all the means of wealth and you just work for me. Pure capitalism without regulation would support Microsoft killing innovation, etc.; it can be a very evil thing. It comes down to the role of government, I believe that the role of government is to make sure that the playing field is designed to be fair; there will be some winners and some losers, but everyone should have enough well-being to still be able to suit up and play the game. When the system starts killing off some of the players, that is when it is wrong and pure capitalism does this. I want the tax surplus going to the social security trust fund that was raided in the past. I don't support tax cuts at this time; maybe later, but according to demographics, the surplus will be short lived.

3) Abortion - I believe the decision is between the family doctor and the family. I support parental notification with exceptions for bad families where a judge decides. I don't want it banned with no mechanism for determining life of the mother issues and I don't want the government involved in that determination. I remember the coathanger period and I don't want to see that returned. You just get a black market in abortion doctors and add to organized crime.

4) Military - I support some reasonable amount of investment in technology, but I also support much of the downsizing for now. Base closings and all of that; good stuff. There is a lot of abuse and waste in the military industial complex of this country.

5) The stupid flag burning issue; I support not changing the constitution over frivolous things like this. I don't like the Republican's constantly trying to tamper with the Constitution every time they think it will win them a few extra votes. They don't respect the sacredness of that document to me.

6) School prayer and separation of church and state; this is not a Christian country, it is a Constitutional country. I prefer the Constitution to inform us about our government, not the Bible which should stay in the church. I don't want to see the U.S. someday turn into Lebanon because religious factions are fighting over who controls our institutions of government.

7) Taxes - I support tax cuts and the downsizing of government, but I want those tax cuts distributed fairly so that all segments of the society end up with maximum well-being, not just one segment.

8) Guns - I oppose the NRA and all the gun-toting nutcases and particularly the nutcase militia movement that the NRA seems to champion. We got one blown up federal building partial done due to this. I am for gun control; this country has too many guns and hunters don't need AK-47's.

9) Welfare Reform; great, this is going well.

10) Children - I am for the government doing what it can to help child care and working people get day care in safe settings. I think this is a legitimate role for government, though I want it through regulation and tax incentives.

11) I am against the flat tax movement. The complex tax code makes it possible to move money around through incentives and discourage other things. I think in the end it is better left alone.

12) Environment - I believe that big business will pollute and destroy everything in site if not regulated. The government is the only protection against abuse. I don't want this country to be like Poland or Eastern Europe. Clean air, clean water, protection of endangered species; good stuff. I don't care if it costs some jobs and some profit. There is a responsibility.

There is a list of some of the issues.
