Patrick:

About STM I think they were saying until the last moment or were
hoping until the last moment to keep revenues flat. But it looks
like they'll be down (like everyone else). However what I have
seen recently gives me hope that the markets are responding well to
bad news and I think that is a very good healthy sign for the next few months - the speculators are out of most of the stocks right now and the only guys left are reluctant to sell. This is the sign of a bottom IMHO.

I just saw something that blew me away - fab cap. utilization
in 1995 was around 96%! No wonder those OEMs were running scared
and built up inventories (thereby leading to a disastrous 1996).

In H2 1996 I think fab utilization fell like a rock to maybe
80% maybe (I'll have to check). Now I think it is I will guess
something around 70-80% as well for the entire industry. Have you
seen any numbers to confirm? All I recall seeing is the Taiwan
fabs at 65% or so utilization.

On FC and SCSI yes they will coexist. I actually think we will
see FC in the boxes as well (I think for Storage Area Networks you'll see FC and SCSI but mostly FC over time - scalability). Also can run over much longer distances. I think they are trying to get FC upto 400 Mb/s from the current 160 (= the Ultra3 SCSI). You are right the backward compatibility (and lack of hassles) is a big thing in favor for SCSI without a doubt.
