nf, all, another NA launch... TELUS MOBILITY LAUNCHES DIGITAL WIRELESS SERVICE IN THE CALGARY AND EDMONTON AREA CALGARY, Sept. 21 /CNW/ - TELUS Mobility today launched its advanced digital wireless service providing the most extensive coverage in Calgary and Edmonton and surrounding area. TELUS Mobility's new digital service utilizes Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) which provides superior call capacity capability over that of analog as well as other digital technologies. Introduction of this service provides both personal and business users with a new choice for wireless service, and access to one of the best wireless networks in North America. TELUS Mobility's wireless digital service combines many advanced features such as Calling Line ID, Enhanced Message Waiting Indicator, and numeric paging. The launch of our quality digital wireless service demonstrates TELUS Mobility's leadership in Alberta,'' said Harry Truderung, president of TELUS Mobility. This move signifies more choice for our customers and much more affordable service for both cellular and digital cellular customers.'' TELUS Mobility's customers will use dual digital band phones that have both digital and analog abilities. If a customer travels outside the coverage area, the phone will automatically switch to the analog mode. The new telephones operate at the 1.9 GHz frequency band. TELUS Mobility plans to deploy digital wireless technology in other centres such as Red Deer, Lethbridge, Fort McMurray, and Grande Prairie over the next 15 months. Since 1992, TELUS Mobility tested various digital technologies while they were being developed and chose its digital technology based on superior quality and coverage performance. TELUS Mobility has invested $50 million to date in its digital network and recently ended a three-month trial with 1100 customers in Calgary and Edmonton. The customer trial confirmed superior digital quality coverage, network service quality and the benefits of TELUS Mobility's digital service, such as call clarity, improved battery life and enhanced features like numeric paging. TELUS' digital network provides coverage to areas surrounding Calgary such as Cochrane, Airdrie, and Chestermere Lake and communities such as Fort Saskatchewan, Leduc, and Spruce Grove near Edmonton. TELUS Mobility is one of the few wireless providers to offer this extensive digital coverage. The digital system provides more choice for our customers. Our analog network continues to provide the most extensive coverage, both urban and rural, in Alberta. This analog coverage will continue to meet the needs of both digital and traditional customers for many years yet,'' Truderung said. TELUS Mobility is Alberta's leading supplier of wireless mobile voice and data communications, through cellular, paging and private radio systems. TELUS Corporation, Canada's third largest telecommunications company, manages $4.0 billion in assets. The TELUS group of companies provides a full range of advanced communications services and products.
