John: maybe 7 trading days ago CBS closed at $24 1/6th, right ? And didn't 'she' intra two Fridays ago hit $23 7/16th ? Now if your accept that $24 1/6th as a recent closing low than Fridays' close at $28 5/8th represents a whopping 19% gain in 5 days ! And even at todays close at $27 1/4 'she' is still up 13% in 6 days ! So maybe its just profit taking by those that need hard profits to offset lots of losses ? I mean with all the margin calls that I assume have been rolling in wouldn't you also take profits to pay off margin calls ? The way I look at it CBS is making progress in the ratings game. I, as a CBS investor think their AFL coverage is top notch. Lets look at the ratings for Sat (college football overtime game) and Sun AFL dble hdr results before jumping off a bridge. Also, lets look at whether those youthful targeted prime time Sat shows did well ? Lets see if Sun prime is still strong.

Thanks

John,

Just a couple of comments on what you wrote. To the best of my knowledge CBS did not say that 3rd qtr earnings would beat estimates. If you refer to the following excerpt, Mel said they would be better than last year. Well, last year they lost three cents. Estimates for this year are for .00 so they could still miss estimates and be better than last year. For fourth quarter, Mel said it would be 'a lot better' than third quarter. I don't know how much better, but Zack's has estimates of six cents.

Excerpt from biz.yahoo.com
CBS Corp (NYSE:CBS - news) President Mel Karmazin said
Wednesday that he expected the company's third-quarter results to exceed year-ago levels, while fourth-quarter results would be ''a lot better'' than the third quarter.

My point is that the estimates would indicate that the Street is already expecting at least the level of performance to which Mel alludes.
