If you haven't seen this before, I thought you might enjoy it. It's from a letter written by T. Jefferson to J. Madison at the time the House was considering impeachment proceedings against Blount:

"...I see nothing in the mode of proceeding by impeachment but the most formidable weapon for the purposes of a dominant faction that ever was contrived. It would be the most effectual one for getting rid of any man whom they consider dangerous to their views, and I do not know that we could count on one third in an emergency.....I know of no solid purpose of punishment which the courts of law are not equal to, and history shows that in England, Impeachment has been an engine more of passion than justice." 2-15-1798

I axed the middle part that was about the specific numbers of party members at that time.
